The A-Bomb Dome, part of the Peace Memorial Park, is located near the center of Hiroshima City.
It served as the Industrial Promotion Hall until the bomb exploded almost directly above it, destroying most of the city.
About 70,000 people were killed instantly, while 70,000 more suffered from effects of radiation caused by the bomb. It has since been preserved as a memorial to those who were killed by the first atomic bomb to be used in war. It stands as a symbol of peace and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in August 1996.
