Itsukushima Shrine

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Itsukushima Shrine is an impressive, red-lacquered complex of halls and pathways.
Each part of the complex has been designated as either a National Treasure or a National Important Cultural Asset. The shrine's present form dates from 1168, when it was rebuilt under the patronage of Taira no Kiyomori, the first samurai conqueror.
Visitors might catch a glimpse of a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony held at the shrine, and the priest's ceremonial dance is also a memorable sight.
